when i was presented with a great opportunity.
now i get a whole lot of offers, people looking to buy. but my truck has simply not been for sale, at any price. have not had any intention to change that.
but i have come to a sudden decision that i ought to if nothing else re-vamp things.
now mind you i didnt just come to this decision light hearted.
it is a decision that comes of necesity......
SO there you have it........
well sorta. thats the short of it.
the long of it is that i was cruising home, after just getting out of work, and a car pulled out of a sub-division(park road 37, close to highway 16, where the construction is at). they pulled out without seeing me, and there was nowhere to go. i mashed the brakes, downshifted, locked it all up, and still hit a girl in the other car at all of 40 mph. i was miraculously able to hop out. there were people there on the scene real quick, that were able to pull her out. she was out cold. she came to after a little bit, and they hauled her in to a hospital. be cool if you guys prayed for her recovery...... she didnt look so good. i ended up with a few bruises, and a cut.
had to harangle with the tow truck driver to get him to haul my truck to the house. i hate trying to deal with tow yards, and didnt want to have any of it, or storage, or have my stuff dug through by the staff there. and i am not about to let the insurance company take my truck. i’ll “buy” it back after whatever payout. i have had her way to long. we been a whole lot of places together. and she took pretty downright good care of me today........... i can rebuild her, i have the technology, i can make her better than she was better, stronger, faster.
i’ll see you guys on the other side.....

Most important thing is that you’re okay

That sucks. Glad she did her job and took care of you. Hope the girl is okay, too.

wew-whee

yeah, me too, kid couldnt of been more than about 18 or 19 years old.....

Do you actually have a metal tractor seat in your truck? That doesn’t seem comfortable
![]() 07/22/2017 at 22:48 |
|
Noooo!!!! Glad you’re ok! Hopefully she will be too.
![]() 07/22/2017 at 22:52 |

yeah. its a whole lot more comfortable than most people would think. it has a shape that supports your “form”, and its also on an old front suspension coil spring, so it has a whole lot of give when you go over bumps, sways around corners. its comfortable for 2, 2.5 hours at a pop before you feel that you ought to get out and stretch. but that is about the same with most other seats. BIG thing, though is that it isnt fabric that will tear.

Were you sitting on a tractor seat?

That’s a hard hit you took. That bent steering wheel is scary. Do you have belts in it or no? I’ve owned a couple of cars without belts - never gave it much thought, really, although I did total one of them and walk away.
![]() 07/22/2017 at 22:55 |

Well, *that’s* horrifying.
![]() 07/22/2017 at 22:57 |

I guess having it on cool springs would be nice, like those big sprung bike seats.
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:06 |
|
yes, its more comfortable than it looks.....
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:11 |

it has a lap only belt, and i always have made sure to keep it snug. the steering wheel came back, and slapped me in the face/ chest. the whole steering box got shoved back towards me....... but it was shocking how much of the truck interior deformed/ tweaked with the impact........
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:13 |
|
Damn! Glad you’re okay - that’s quite a hit.
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:17 |

yeah, it took me a few seconds to get my wits together to get out. was just kinda looking around in disbelief. floor was mangled, trans cover was ripped wide open, steering wheel wadded up, and the hood bent everythin inside wasnt where it ought be...... took me a second there to say “my this looks bad, i just might be hurt”..... “ i really ought to get out now”........

Dang.... I think I know exactly which subdivision you are talking about. People haul down PR37 and the sight lines are short. Gotta be careful pulling out onto it. Glad to hear you’re ok. Hopefully she’s OK and never tries that stunt again.

Yeah, those old cars/trucks don’t have the crumple zones new cars do. Really glad you got it slowed down a bit first, and that it at least has the lap belt. I figured it did- ‘65 was when they became mandatory, although the ‘65 Skylark I totaled didn’t have them for some reason. Good on you for getting the truck home too— if you didn’t do that, you’d probably never see it again. Have a good evening - you’ve had a rough day.

yes, very much like those.......
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:21 |

thank you......
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:26 |
|
oddly enough, i was going a bit slower than i normally would.... the sight lines are way short right there.....
i am VERY glad to tell you that i am mostly okay(bruises)...... i hope that she comes through too.......
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:32 |
|
yeah, in older cars/trucks YOU are the crumple zone. the amazing thing, was that the car i hit, didnt look that bad off. looked like it had a whole lot of camber, and the door wouldnt open. sheared the front fender, and wadded up the front didnt look near as dramatic as the truck...... i have always known that tow yards are a black hole, and that they make it as NEAR impossible to get your car back as they can..
thanks, i’m winding it down in a hurry.....
![]() 07/22/2017 at 23:33 |

thank you, im hoping too......

they pulled out without seeing me
You mean, without LOOKING! #@&$@!$#@&*^! Glad you’re okay. Gonna be a hell of a project...

Jesus.. so no seatbelt either?
You’re very lucky. I feel risky just driving my old truck without a collapsible column.
![]() 07/23/2017 at 00:18 |
|
thank you,
yeah, thats the other way of saying it. and probably a whole lot closer to it. i am going to try and make it into an epic project to keep it out of the jaws of the crusher.
i am setting my mind to try and salvage everything that i can, maybe more than i should. most importantly is that i am going to try and make sure that it is safe when done.
going to dig out the hammers, and the come alongs, and the high lift jacks, the torch, and square the body back up....front of the frame is done, MIGHT could clip it, or slightly update it with a squarebody frame.....
... nothing worth doing is asy...... and nothing easy is worth doing.......i been meaning to challenge myself more anyhow.....
![]() 07/23/2017 at 00:21 |

its got a seatbelt, but its just a lap belt.
its got an old collapsible column, but the steering box just moved soo much in the impact, that it STILL came up and hit me.........

Kintsugi! I love that spirit of repair. Even drift stitches are kinda cool, too. A deer once smacked into the side of my LeSabre, cracking the plastic fender, so I fixed it with rivets. It looked really cool, until another deer came along and persuaded me to just replace the fender already.
![]() 07/23/2017 at 01:24 |
|
yes THIS, Kintsugi..... that fender was looking good, until the other deer came along. the drift stitches have always been pretty cool to me.
i’ll have to keep a repair journal on the process, so you guys can see madness in motion..... “rage against the dying of the light”, and all that.
how could i possibly give up, gotta at least try........

Just saw this.
So glad you are OK! Looks like a hell of a hit.

thank you,
i was thinking as i locked the tires up, “oh man this is gonna hurt”...
i know that i was still doing an honest 35-40 on impact.... that 60 impala vs modern impala crash video wasnt a joke.
i was more than fortunate to walk away from it......
